競馬というのはお金がかかるゆえに、スポーツの王様である。しかし競争に勝てば莫大なお金が手に入ることもある.馬主や調教師や賭けに参加した人達すべてに。シルバーブレイザーはまだ若い馬だが、たくさんのレースで一着になっている馬であった。ある夜この馬が厩舎から突然消え、調教師が殺害された。警察は犯人を追い、馬主は馬を探したものの行方はつかめない。そこで彼らはシャーロック・ホームズの助けを借りるべく、221B ベイカー通りへ手紙を出した。
